LOPATA VIRGIN FOREST

Lopata is a forest reserve, located between the upper Vogel cable car station and Žagarjev graben. Shallow soil, mossy rocks and picturesque trees curved in all directions are typical of this rugged and rocky area. Lopata is mostly made up of beech and spruce forest, with larches and dwarf pines in the lower rocky part.

The “queen” of Bohinj spruces, 42m high and 149cm in diameter at chest height grows under the Rjava skala. Foresters estimate that it is around 300 years old.

WHAT IS A VIRGIN FOREST?

A virgin forest is one which has developed with little or no human disturbance. Trees and other plants simply live out the natural cycle of life and death without human intervention or management.
